Bathroom lighting is different from many other rooms in the home because of safety.  Bathroom lights are more likely to come in to contact with water and we all know that water and electricity are not a good combination.

Here is a diagram which demonstrates the different zones in a bathroom and how they differ in safety requirements.  In Zone 1 light fittings must be spray proof, in Zone 2 they must be splash proof and for Zone 3 there are no specific requirements.

The bathroom safety requirements are regulated by an IP ratings system as follows.

There are different types of bathroom lighting, the obvious being ceiling lights, but you may also want wall lights, mirror lights or even a light combined with a shaving socket. For both ceiling and wall lights flush circular lights are popular or a cluster of spotlights.  However providing they meet safety requirements, you can go for the usual hanging light fitting or sunk downlights.
